Autumn pushed her way through the hospital doors. Dadâs transportation had arrived, and they were preparing to move him to the hospital in Anchorage, though he would likely be released in a day or two. Nolan had taken care of the paperwork and arranged for security for Dad. She wasnât sure if he was truly in danger, but she wouldnât take any chances and appreciated that Nolan agreed.
She entered the hospital room and found Dad awake. Good. Earlier he was asleep, she had headed to Grierâs cabin and got sidetracked.
He blinked at her and smiled, but it quickly turned to a frown. âAutumn . . .â His voice sounded strained.
She approached the bed and reached for his hand. Squeezed. âDad, Iâm so glad youâre okay. Iâve been worried.â
How did she broach the topic? She had so many questions she wished sheâd asked sooner. But there was never a good time.
She sat on the edge of the bed. âIâm sure youâve been informed youâre being transferred and why.â
He shook his head, and fear welled in his eyes. âNot me, Autumn. You . . . youâre the one.â
âIâm the one what?â
âYouâre in danger.â
âA man shot you, Dad. But Iâm listening. Tell me what you know.â
âItâs all my fault.â
Her breath built up in her chest, growing with her impatience. âPlease, Dad. I need to know everything so I can close this down. Find out why you were shot.â The man still hadnât been IDâd, at least that sheâd been informed of.
âNo. Donât go after him.â
She leaned closer. âGo after who? The guy who shot you is dead. Is there someone else? Whoâs behind this?â
The beeping on his heart rate monitor increased. Sheâd upset him. How did she make him tell her?
âHe wants to take you from me.â He croaked out each word.
She moved off the bed and a nurse rushed in but didnât look at Autumn.
âWhat pain med is he on?â Autumn asked.
âHeâs on a variety of medications.â
That didnât help. Autumn had to assume the medications and his recent gunshot wound were unfortunately interfering with his mind and responses, which wasnât unusual.
âI promise Iâll be careful, Dad. Just calm down. You want to help me, then calm down and talk to me.â
He closed his eyes and took in a few breaths. The nurse injected something into his IV, then glanced at Autumn. âThis will help him calm down.â
âI need him to answer questions.â
The nurse smiled at her father, ignoring Autumnâs comment.
âTheyâll be in soon to move you, Mr. Long.â The nurse patted his arm and then exited the room.
Angie quietly knocked against the doorjamb and glanced at Autumn, who waved her in. âHowâs he doing?â
âHeâs holding on. Strong as a horse, Dr. Combs said.â
âIâm glad to hear it.â Angie chewed her lip, looking like she wasnât convinced.
Neither was Autumn. Nor was she sure that her father would be willing to share what he knew with someone else present, but she needed answers. Pulling out her iPad, she retrieved the images sheâd createdâa virtual lineupâthen turned the iPad to him.
